Discover The Great Southern

The newest addition to Australia’s luxury train experiences, the Great Southern is set to enter service in late 2019. Exploring the vibrant southeast coast in truly exclusive style, the train will provide a brand-new adventure linking Adelaide and Brisbane, taking in the spectacular Grampians mountains, the nation’s capital of Canberra, the magnificent coastal scenery of New South Wales and the tropical reaches of Tangalooma. Extend your trip even further to Perth, on the west coast, for a wonderfully well-rounded view of southern Australia’s best-known sights.

There are 16 departures available on board the Great Southern service, offering an exciting new addition to Australia’s rail offering as The Ghan celebrates its 90th birthday, and the Indian Pacific approaches its half-century milestone.

More details will be available closer to the time of departure.

The Experience

With its plush carriages and modern amenities, Great Southern Rail allows you to see some of the best sights in the country from the sublime comfort of your cabin. Feel the excitement build as you set off on one of the world’s finest coast-to-coast crossings, which also happens to include the longest stretch of straight railway track in existence. You’ll enjoy the finest dining and first-class beverages as you smoothly glide across the country. Take in the views of the diverse scenery from the comfort of your private cabin or enjoy convivial company in the lounge car. In the evenings it’s the perfect place for a nightcap before going to bed. And in the morning you’ll open your curtains to yet another exhilarating view.

While service on board is exceptional, it is also laidback in a way that you can expect when travelling in Australia; there’s no need to dress up unless you specifically want to, and socialising with other guests is encouraged. However, if you’d prefer to relax in your cabin and enjoy the views with a book or the train commentary, that’s perfectly acceptable too.

Food

Your dining options depend on the level of service you have opted for, but all meals take place in the beautifully appointed Queen Adelaide restaurant car or the Platinum Club. Menus change frequently and feature Australian cuisine and more international flavours, plus sumptuous local wines. Dishes may include mouth-watering saltwater barramundi and kangaroo fillet, or outback lamb. Platinum Service guests receive more diverse dining options and can expect sumptuous breakfasts served in-cabin on request, two-course lunches and delicious four-course dinners.

Dress Code

A smart casual dress code is observed on board. We recommend warm clothing for outback experiences in the early morning or evening, a hat, plenty of sunscreen and comfortable shoes.
